Judo for Self-Defense

Judo is a useful tool for self-defence, especially when it comes to our kids. Children have faced bullying for as long as there have been children. But recent media attention has highlighted some tragic stories of children who couldn't deal with the abuse on their own.

The art of judo was created in Japan in 1882 by Jigoro Kano, with that very situation in mind. He turned to martial arts because of bullying at the school he attended and developed judo into the all-encompassing mindset and way of life that it is today.

Budokai Judo Club co-founder Sensei Ray Litvak understands too, having gone through his period of bullying as a child. At a young age, Ray began judo lessons for self-defence and never looked back.

Judo: The Gentle Way

One of the founding principles of judo, the gentle way, is the key to understanding why it's an ideal self-defence system for kids. It means:

The specific techniques all work towards those goals. Self-defence training in the form of judo classes teaches children that bullies can be dealt with, and dangers can be avoided.

Judo teaches one how to avoid conflict if possible and deal with it if necessary without anger in a way that defuses aggression rather than adding to it.

In addition to self-defence skills, judo classes have many other benefits:

Sensei Ray Litvak is a 3rd-degree black belt in Judo and works hard to maintain a fun and supportive environment for kids and all students that want to learn judo and self-defence.
