Based in North York, Budokai Judo Club specializes in teaching judo to kids, teens and adults of all ages in and near North York, Ontario, with an emphasis on proper judo technique, style, self-defence and safety.

The judo club has top instructors including Bill Sund, a 4th-degree black belt in Judo and Ray Litvak, a 3rd-degree black belt in judo. Judo classes are available for beginner, medium and advanced level students.

Our focus is on kids judo classes, but students of all ages are welcome to practise judo at Budokai Judo Club.

The Budokai Judo Club Difference

When it comes to Judo, it's about the experience. And the judo teachers at Budokai have it.

The club is led by Senseis Ray Litvak and Bill Sund, who have over 90 years of combined judo study, competition and instruction under their belts.

Bill and Ray bring a deep understanding and patience to each and every class. Students learn under the watchful eye of both judo instructors; learning and progressing at their own pace.

Meet Sund Sensei

Sund Sensei is a fourth-degree black belt registered with Judo Ontario, Judo Canada and the Kodokan Judo Institute, Japan. He has been practicing judo since the 1950s and competed at the national and international level for many years. As a result, he has many titles and judo awards to his credit.

He also practiced under the guidance of Sensei Chris Toule of the original Budokai Judo Club. Sensei Toule emphasized excellent technique and was a gifted teacher.

A love of teaching judo has fostered and flourished with Sensei Sund over the years. He passes his knowledge along to those wanting to learn judo and or enhance their competition experience and knowledge.

Meet Litvak Sensei

Litvak Sensei is a 3rd-degree black belt registered with Judo Ontario, Judo Canada and the Kodokan Judo Institute of Japan. He is a student, a teacher and a former competitor.

He won the AM-CAN INTERNATIONAL JUDO CHALLENGE in 1989. Ray represented Canada in the 1989 Maccabiah games and has competed in other tournaments across North America.

Ray began practicing judo in 1979. Since then, he participated in competitions at the local, provincial and international levels. Ray has also had the privilege of training and mentoring with Sensei Toule.

Ray turned to teach judo after competing so he could share his knowledge and passion for judo with others.

His philosophy is strongly steeped in judo. It was because of Judo that he overcame many challenges in his youth, including being bullied as a child.

He is committed to giving back to the sport that has given him so much. While he enjoys the physical benefits of judo, he also believes it is a potent form of self-defence for kids and adults and an aid in building character, confidence and courage. His experience and passion have made him a friendly and patient instructor to his pupils.

Ray got his experience through his role as a judo instructor at Budokai Judo Club in the 1970s and at North York Parks & Recreation starting in the 1980s. He acted as program director for two years at the North York Parks & Recreation Martial Arts Camp.

Ray was chief instructor at the North York YMCA, Grant Brothers Mixed Martial Arts Academy, and taught judo at schools and community centers in the GTA.

His students have gone on to reach their black belts and achieve success in provincial, national and international competitions.
