Why Take Judo Lessons?

Judo offers a variety of benefits that only begin with physical fitness.
• You’ll get in shape - judo helps with flexibility, agility, strength and control as well as overall fitness
• Self-defense - you’ll learn how to effectively handle tricky situations, increasing your level of confidence in general

Judo for Kids in the Vaughan Area

Children live in a world where they often don’t have control over what happens and that can be scary for kids and their parents alike. Judo classes can help ease your concerns and theirs in a variety of ways.

The media has recently put the spotlight on an age old problem - bullying and the terrible and sometimes tragic consequences of it. Vaughn is no exception to this universal issue.

As your Sensei Ray Litvak, I know exactly what bullying is all about from personal experience. I was a late bloomer; growing up smaller than most of the kids in my class which made me an easy target for all the bullies in my school. I endured more black eyes, bruises and bloodied knuckles than I care to remember.

Then at age 12, I took my first judo lesson and it changed my life. I was an easy victim no more - and I can help to impart that sense of confidence in your child too.

I've been teaching judo to kids for more than three decades and I know that it's one of the best martial art disciplines for children. I base that on a number of reasons, among them:
• Judo is all about leverage, teaching a smaller person how to overcome a larger opponent
• Judo movements don't include punches or kicks and so are safe to practise even during sparring sessions
• Judo techniques are most effective when someone is grabbed or attacked, teaching your child how to react to aggression - not how to cause it

The benefits of judo lessons certainly aren't all about the physical aspects. You'll be able to see their confidence levels and self-assurance grow along with their proficiency at this time honoured martial art.

When it comes to bullying, the beauty of judo is that it can benefit both the victim and the bully - or potential bully - too.

Along with confidence, judo teaches children about control and discipline. It teaches the principle of avoiding conflict until you have no other choice and that even then, you respond in a way that's considered and thoughtful - not in anger or emotion.

In this age of rising obesity levels and couch potato kids, judo offers fitness in a context they'll get so much more out of.

• Bring your child for free lessons - you have nothing to lose and a world of confidence and physical activity to gain.
