About our Club
Judo is an explosive grappling martial art and sport that has evolved from its roots in feudal Japanese jujutsu to the modern Olympic sport it is today. It is the most popular martial art in the world, and it is the second most participated sport in the world, behind soccer. While judo can be practiced at a highly dynamic level by competitive athletes, judo is also an outstanding means of physical education for children -- given it's emphasis on balance and core strength -- and it was in this spirit that judo was initially conceived by its founder in 1882.
Whether it is for the general fitness of your child, for a competitive career in judo, or a powerful MMA base, the instructors at Grant Brothers MMA & Judo Club in Toronto will teach your child in a safe and fun way that will make them forget that they are exercising.
The head instructor at Grant Brothers is Jon Roberts, a former Canadian Junior National Champion and Pan-American Bronze medalist who has spent two-and-a-half years doing judo training in Japan at both the International Budo University and Tokai University (featured in the History Channel's "Human Weapon" judo episode).
Jon has trained with dozens of national team members from all around the world, and trained under several World and Olympic champions including Yasuhiro Yamashita, Kosei Inoue, and many others. He has taught judo at several public and private schools across the Greater Toronto Area and has a M.A. in East Asian Studies from the University of Toronto.
Because of his diverse experiences-- studying judo in Japan as well as delving into judo's history for his master's thesis -- very few instructors can teach judo with the knowledge which Jon can provide. Come in and learn from the best.
