About our Club
Judo is a martial art and combat sport that originated in Japan in the late 19th century. It combines spectacular throws, takedowns, grappling and submissions (joint locks and chokes) that have led to a number of offshoots including Sambo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ).The first martial art to be included in the Olympics, Judo is also the most popular martial art in the world, and the second most participated sport worldwide, behind soccer. While judo can be practiced at a highly dynamic level by competitive athletes, it is also an outstanding means of self-defense and physical fitness for both children and adults -- given its emphasis on balance, core strength, flexibility and agility.
Whether your goal is to get in shape, to compete in Judo tournaments, or develop a powerful base for Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), the judo instructors at Grant Brothers MMA & Judo Club in North York will teach you and/or your child judo in a safe and fun way that will ensure you learn while getting fit and having fun.
The head instructor at Grant Brothers is Jon Roberts, a former Canadian Junior National Judo Champion and Pan-American Bronze medalist who has spent over 2 years studying judo in Japan at both the International Budo University and the famed Tokai University Judo Club (featured in the History Channel's "Human Weapon" judo episode).
Jon has trained with dozens of national judo team members from all around the world, and trained under several World and Olympic judo champions including Yasuhiro Yamashita, Kosei Inoue, and many others. He has taught judo at several public and private clubs across the Greater Toronto Area and has a M.A. in East Asian Studies from the University of Toronto.
An experienced International Judo competitor, avid student of the sport and generous instructor are qualities that combine to make Jon one of the most sought after judo instructors in the GTA.
