BJJ & Submission Grappling News

Friday, August 28th, 2009

Submission grapplers and fans of submission grappling will want to mark MMA Expo 2009 in Montreal on their grappling calendar.

Held on the weekend of October 17th and 18th, MMA Expo Montreal will host two of the world’s most prestigious submission grappling tournaments and feature some of the best submission grapplers and BJJ competitors in the world.  One of the prizes will include an all expenses paid trip to attend the 2010 World Cup in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

The joint venture agreement, signed by Gerald Chopik – President of the Mixed Martial Arts Expo – will mark “the first time ever that the Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) No-Gi Submission Series and the Abu Dhabi Pro BJJ Series will be held on the same weekend and the same venue.”

Is MMA a Sport or Martial Art?

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

According to Loudon Owen, chairman of The Fight Network, MMA is actually several sports:  More specifically, a fusion of combat sports that involve components such as striking, takedowns and grappling.

Although not an Olympic Sport, individual elements of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) have been part of the modern Olympic landscape for years.  For example, striking (Boxing, Tae Kwon Do); takedowns, throws and grappling (Judo, Wrestling) are some of the most popular Olympic spectator sports around.

As stand alone combat sports they are practiced daily in Martial Arts and Sports Clubs, Middle schools and Universities/Colleges across Ontario and beyond by thousands of men, women and children.  Combined – or mixed – they are excellent forms of fitness and make for some of the most entertaining sporting events around.

As to why MMA sporting events are banned in Ontario, there has yet to be a reasonable explanation provided.  Those looking for answers to this question are encouraged to contact Ken Hayashi of the Ontario Athletic Commission.

Women’s Boxing in 2012 Olympics

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

London will be host to the 2012 Olympics and if amateur boxing has its way, will also usher in a new era in women’s amateur boxing.

Women have enjoyed representation in Olympic combat sports for years including Judo, Wrestling and Tae Kwon Do, making the absence of female boxing a bit of a mystery.

According to International Boxing Association president Wu Ching-Kuo, “Boxing is the only sport in the Olympic programme without women and we believe we are ready.”

The decision to allow women’s boxing in the Olympics should be made sometime in 2009.

Fedor and UFC

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

According to the MMA buzz, it’s official: Fedor will not be fighting in the UFC anytime soon.

Rather, he signed with Strikeforce, who was willing to give M-1 Global (the company that Fedor has an ownership stake in) the co-promotion status that the UFC passed on.

As for a blockbuster card, it’s questionable whether Strikeforce and M-1 can serve up an opponent/sacrificial lamb worthy of Fedor’s attention; one that will generate the fan interest that a Fedor/Brock card would have.

Sadly, Brock’s still king of the castle.
