North York Judo Club’s ‘Camp of Champions’ 2009

The North York Judo Club will be hosting its 3rd annual Camp of Champions from August 16th to 21st.

Held in Selkirk, Ontario the camp will feature premiere Canadian Judoka and Grappler Jean Pierre Cantin whose resume includes:
• Canadian Junior National Coach since 2001
• 12 time Canadian Judo Champion
• Pan American Judo Champion 1990-94
• Judo Olympian – Barcelona 1992

Judoka and/or grapplers serious about improving their skills are invited and should consider attending.

Tai Chi Benefits Arthritis Sufferers

As if you needed more reasons to do Tai Chi, A recent study by The George Institute for International Health has found Tai Chi to have positive health benefits for those suffering from arthritis.  The study notes that “Tai chi produces positive effects for improving pain and disability among arthritis sufferers.”

International Mixed Martial Arts Association 2009

Mixed Martial Artists in Windsor, Southwestern Ontario and beyond will be meeting, greeting and competing on July 25th and 26th at the WFCU Centre in Windsor Ontario for The International Mixed Martial Arts Association’s SHOGUN League and Tournament Series. 

Billed as “The only league created for the cross training mixed martial artist,” the competition is open to all systems and fighting styles including:
• Kobudo/Weapons
• Grappling (Gi and No Gi)
• Hybrid Sparring
• Point Fighting – ‘Touch Contact’

About The International Mixed Martial Arts Association
An Educational Institution for martial arts (modern and traditional) and martial artists, The International Mixed Martial Arts Association (IMMAA) is open to all combat systems and styles from around the world.  As such, they work with a number of national and international organizations in an effort to ensure that their competitions and rules are in accordance with many national and international governing bodies.

KCG Grappling International ~ Ottawa Ontario

Grappling fans can expect to be treated to top level grappling at the ‘2009 Canadian KCG Grappling International’ tournament held on August 8th and 9th, 2009 at Algonquin College in Ottawa Ontario.

Organized by ‘The Canadian Amateur Wrestling Association,’  ‘National Capital Wrestling Club’ and ‘United Mixed Martial Art,’ this event is open to both male and female grapplers and wrestlers aged 20+ and will also include a junior grapplers division.

This tournament is sanctioned by Fila and as such, 2009 FILA Grappling Rules will apply.  Click here for information about FILA rules.

Upcoming Judo Tournaments

For Judoka, Judo connoisseurs and those that appreciate grappling and the art of the throw are the following local – and not so local – tournaments:

2009 Ontario Schools Judo Championships – Held at The Hershey Centre in Mississauga, this Judo tournament will be run by David Miller, head Judo instructor at Royal St. George’s College, and is open to all Elementary & Secondary School students under 19 years old.  For more information, contact dmiller@rsgc.on.ca.

2009 KC Judo Club Tournament – Hosted by KC Judo Club in Hamilton, this event is sanctioned by Judo Ontario and will be held on June 27th at 45 Ellis Avenue in Hamilton Ontario.  Eligibility includes white to blue belts from ages 7-70.  Contact KC Judo Club  for more information.

2009 Canadian Youth Championships – Held in Calgary, Alberta from July 3rd to July 5th, this event features three age groups; Under 15, Under 17 and Under 20 and will be a qualifying tournament for the Junior World Championships.  Contact Judo Canada for more information.

Toronto Jiu Jitsu Classic

Presented by the organizers of The Copa Ontario, the tournament will be held  at Ryerson University in downtown Toronto.

MMA Legend Appearing in Toronto

Wanderlei Silva will be appearing on Saturday July 4th 2009 at Revolution Mixed Martial Arts School in Toronto Ontario.  The seminar will feature MMA and Striking techniques as demonstrated by Silva, one of the best in the game.

Silva, who goes by the moniker “the axe murderer,” is a striking specialist best  known for meting out vicious Muay Thai knees to the heads and bodies of opponents.  Silva is also a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Carlos Gracie, Jr. and the former Pride Middleweight (205lb) and Pride 2003 Middleweight Grand Prix champion.

During a prolific MMA career that has spanned over 10 years – with the scar tissue to provie it – Silva has fought a who’s who of UFC and Pride fighters such as Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, Kazushi Sakuraba, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Chuck Liddell, Dan Henderson and Keith Jardine, to name a few.  Adding to the list of notable MMA fighters he’ll have faced is Rich Franklin, who Silva will meet at UFC 99 on June 13th in Germany.  The fight should be entertaining even though it has no ramifications for any UFC division.

Hardcore Silva fans will also be able to purchase ‘Wanderlei Action Figures’ and other Silva memorabilia at the seminar.

TORONTO MMA EXPO UPDATE

Day 1 of Toronto’s 4th annual MMA EXPO had something for the mixed martial artist in everyone, from newbie to professional including The Ontario Provincial Grappling Championships; wall-to-wall MMA gear, vitamin suppliers; MMA and BJJ demonstrations; bikini clad ring girls sans ring; cauliflower ears, tats and Hooters girls – still not sure what they were doing there, but it’s a fact: MMA makes for strange bedfellows…
 
What was the highlight of the EXPO?  I’d have to say the celebrity appearances of MMA stars such as Shawn Sherk (not sure how this guy makes 155, he’s massive); Matt Hamill; Sam Stout; Dennis Kang; Frank Trigg; Patrick Cote; Jason Macdonald and a pimped out Shonie Carter, to name a few.
 
And the best part?  It didn’t cost $49.95 to see these guys.
