Striking Martial Arts
Striking Martial Arts can turn fists, feet, elbows and knees into weapons of mass destruction, offering the ability to strike from a distance or in the clinch with devastating power. Striking Martial Artists may use hard striking styles such as Karate, Kickboxing and Muay Thai and/or softer styles that block and redirect such as Aikido, Kung Fu and Tai Chi. Some may use a combination of both.
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) pits Strikers, Grapplers and traditional and non-traditional martial artists against one another in full contact matches. Despite initial bad press, today's MMA events have rules, weight classes, referees and ring-side doctors that protect fighters. Made popular by the UFC and Pride Fighting, MMA is fast becoming one of the most popular sports around.
Grappling
Grappling requires skill, leverage, and toughness to submit an opponent. Getting up close and personal, Grappling arts include take downs, chokes and joint locks. Less glamorous than other combat arts, Grappling is gaining in popularity due to success in the UFC and other Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) events. Common grappling styles include BJJ, Judo and Wrestling.
